Striped Skunk

Mephitis mephitis

Trail Tidbits

Striped skunks are found in most of the United States except for parts in Southwest

 They are nocturnal.

They use burrows made by other animals or natural holes under rock piles, tree stumps, or buildings.

Sometimes they will use their long front claws to dig their own den.

They spray a strong, musky, foul-smelling liquid out of their rear end for self-defense. The spray can reach 12 feet!

They eat small mice, insects, eggs, fruit, and carrion.
