Great Horned Owl

Bubo virginianus

Trail Tidbits

Great Horned owls are often called "hoot owls."

The horns are just feathers on top and are not ears.

They have powerful, sharp talons for catching rabbit, mice, bullfrogs, skunks and waterfowl.

In the winter, these nocturnal owls will use an old hawk or squirrel nest to breed rather than make their own.

All owls have the ability to turn their heads around about 3/4 of a circle because of their inability to move their eyes.
